Discussion Q1: Bitterness toward God
Even as a child, Abigail exhibits a bitterness toward God, though she cannot deny his existence. Why is this her response to tragedy? How would you feel toward the Lord if you lost all you held dear?
When I was first crafting Abigail, I considered having her react to her loss in a way you hear a lot of people do today--to say, "Surely there is no God, or why would He let this happen?" I thought that it would be more interesting--and truer to her culture--to instead never doubt that God is, but to be convinced that He doesn't love her, that He values the life of a girl so little that He'll allow her to be ruined. It's not quite that she's angry--it's that she's decided that God obviously values her so little that she might as well agree with Him.
What different reactions to loss have you seen or experienced first hand?
